Windows Explorer refresh problem

I have a bizarre problem which is quite difficult to describe – but here goes.
In Windows Explorer in the left hand pane i’ll click on the + to expand a set of folders. The folders will expand, then contract, then the current folder selection will change to something else ! If i then click on the original folder + again it will then open correctly.
Any ideas anyone ?
