Windows Explorer shows less

I have a Vista premium Edition with a 250G hard drive. My problem is
1) Windows exploer says my hard drive is 222 G with an addition 10 G for the recovery disc and
2) I have about a 181G of hard drive space left which means I have used (222-181 or about 41G. I have used another software to see the usage on my C drive and it says I have used about 10G. Dell says it is the way Vista calclualaes the space . I am not satisfied. Can anyone assist me.
