Windows ME

My computer randomly crashes when it’s shut down. I can’t reproduce consistently. Has been doing this since day one. Just purchased in November 2000. Gateway, running Windows ME. Anyone know why and how to fix? I have only a printer installed. Normal software ie games,landscaping, photo, bellsouth, etc. Had it into Gateway but they sent it back “fixed” which it was not.
