Windows ME Critical Updates Downloads

I have recently installed ME on my computer. It was running fine until I tried to download the latest critical update about defragmentation. It would download but only install partially and then lock up. I have tried it again a few times and it still seems to not be installing. I went to the restore feature to restore to an earlier date but there was nothing there in HELP. I then tried to make a restore point but the only one that is there is one that is dated around december of 1899. HELP!!!!!
