Windows ME vs Windows XP

Currently, the operating system on my Compaq Presario 5000 is ME. It has been working efficiently for 1.5 years and now is starting to crash, run slower, and other issues. Is it better to restore ME or install XP? If I install XP, should I upgrade or purchase a new operating system?
