Windows ME will not recognize my CD-ROM

I have an Acer 40x IDE/Atapi CD-ROM drive…it is not listed on the MS HCL…however, I am able to boot off of the Windows ME startup disk and see it. But when I go into Windows ME, I cannot see my CD-ROM drive at all. A CD-ROM tab does not even show up in Device Mgr. I have tried several different methods from MS Knowledge Base to try and fix this, but nothing has worked.

Any clues anyone?
