Windows Media Player 11 codecs: Won’t play audio track on any DVD discs

Whoever wrote the software for Windows Media Player 11 should be shot! First, the initial download lacks the codecs necessary to play the video from ANY video – be it an actual DVD or a downloaded video. I solved that problem by installing “All-In-One Codecs 6.0.3.0” free download from freecodecs.com. Once I had installed All-in-one Codecs 6.0.3.0 (which includes AC3, DviX, Xvid, mpeg, etc.), suddenly Windows Media PLayer 11 was able to play the video as well as the audio from a downloaded video file (like a TV episode, etc.).
Now, I’ve discovered that, no matter what physical DVD I try to play using the WMP11, it will only play the video portion –> there is NO SOUND!!
I double checked, and it will still play both the audio & video tracks of downloaded video files as before after I had installed Codecs all-in-one.
I’m basically a beginner-intermediate level computer user. Does anyone know where to find free codecs to install so WMP11 will play the audio track on DVD discs? (I know people are very knowledgable and aware of better players than WMP11. I’d be interested in any and all fixes for this issue, but please include ways to get WMP11 working, as well as any suggestions you may have about other players to install on my PC).
Thank you all and I look forward to any help anyone can offer.
