Windows Media Player 7.1 & Windows 2K

Gateway Solo 9300 E Pro with Windows 2000. Windows Media Player 6.4 works fine. If I upgrade to version 7.1. The laptop will not completely shut down. The LCD screen stays active and continues to draw power. The only way to completely power off is to use the power button. It only does this with version 7.1. Any ideas?
