Windows Media Player and WMV File Visualization Problem

I have Windows Vista Ultimate with Windows Media Player 11. When I double click on a wmv, mpeg etc file the Media Player plays the sound the player does not open so that I can see the visualization. If I double click on Media Player and open it either before or after clicking on the wmv file I get the sound and visualization. How do I fix this?
