Windows Movie Maker

I am trying to use Windows Movie Maker, but each time I add things to it, it closes. It appears that there is insufficient memory. Can anyone offer me some explanation on this or is there another freeware application that is better than this. I am just playing with it, nothing serious, but it is frustrating that it closes after putting in 5 images.
