Windows Vista HD issue

My coworker has an IBM T61 and his system is doing something strange.His HD is 80Gig and this morning when he started it up and tried to install something it said he needed more HD space.
he looked and his drive only had 1Gig of free space left.nothing has changed since last night and i’ve never seen this before.Any help would greatly be appreciated.
