Windows XP Backup to a CD Burner

Can you run Windows XP Backup and burn to a cd as a backup device? Microsoft Support site says you can’t and it doesn’t work and says that the burner isn’t accessable. Is there a way around this as the beauty of the cd burner is that you can backup large amounts of data
