WINDOWS XP- Can not delete anything

I am running WIN XP home edition. I can not delete anything by the GUI. I can go into the dos prompt and use trusty old Dos command but if I try to delete from the desktop I get this error: Cannot delete (file): Cannot find the specified path. Make sure you specify the correct path.

Another interesting thing is that event viewer doesn’t want to log anything. ANyone ever see this before?
