windows xp home pro on gateway amd 1.4

after installing xp on this system it reboots and always locks up , before installing xp the ati vid card poped and locked the system down and will not allow any play of any games, the old os was windows me oem install from gateway , i figured that it was part of the problem, but the system is still locking up whats wrong with it ?
