WIndows XP Log Off-Log On Problems

I’m having some problems with the switching between user accounts in XP. Sometimes, when I log off my user account, it does not log off, it simply just stays in my account. I then attempt to restart my computer, whereupon it just hangs. Any solutions? Its really annoying…and I can’t imagine the hard disk damage that has happened so far.
