Windows XP only showing local printers

I have just strted using XP (thanks to Compaq), and ran into a printing issue. After a local printer was installed the the client I cannot print to any network printer (they are not even choices in the printer dropdown). The only printers that are listed are two network printers (IP) that I installed as a workaround and both Acrobat printer and distiller.
