Windows XP PCs won’t read floppies

I work in a Learning Center at a local community college, and often, our new Gateway Windows XP machines will not read perfectly good floppy disks that our students bring in. Students get a message that the disk is not formatted–but when we accessthe disk using our one Windows 98 machine (after virus-checking), it’s obvious that the disk is perfectly fine.

Any solutions that don’t involve recopying or emailing the files will be gratefully considered!
