Windows XP Pro Back-up Problem

I have Win XP Pro on my home computer and have Nero CD burning software. When I have tried to make a back-up copy of my system I consistently get a pop-up window that states “no CD in drive “D”, or “E”, whichever CD drive I have attempted to use. Have checked hardware and is functioning properly. Can anyone give me suggestions on what I may be doing incorrectly?
