Windows XP remove from dual boot?

I had windows 98 se and then installed windows xp professional to dual boot. Win XP installed it’s own bootloader. I want to remove windows XP and leave win98 intact. If I format the xp partition will this also remove the xp bootloader. If not how do i remove the bootloader?
