windows xp sp2 print problems

since installing service pack 2 I have had difficulty printing with a Hewlet Packard 500 PSC printer, scanner, copier. When I try to print, general error message appears document failed to print. Restarting temporarily fixes problem but next time I try to print same error message returns. I have gone through the help and support wizard and I am able to print from command line only.
