winME + modem trouble

I have installed winME and win2000Pro on a partitioned hard disk. Win2000Pro works OK, but winME can not find the modem, so i can not go on line using winME.
I have tried control panel ->modems or add new hardware or reistalling winME, nothing seems to work. Am i being a bit stupid here? Any help or advise would be much appriciated. Thank you.
