WinWord as Doc Editor in VB Application

I would like to integrate WinWord as a document editor in a (VB) application (the fact that it is a VB app is not essential). I’d like to do it the way Outlook does it. Does anyone know how to achieve this?
I succeeded integrating my app in WinWord97, but this is not sufficient since my method is not portable across different versions.
