wireless card – cardbus connection

I have 2 wireless cards that I have been using for over a year. Two days ago, upon inserting a card in my HP notebook and starting up, the wireless card was not recognized. The device manager says the cardbus is fine. I uninstalled and reinstalled and still have no connectivity.
Same result with a second card.

The WLAN settings in control panel/system says that I do not have a card inserted.

What could have happened? How can I fix it?
