Word Document locking up constantly

Have Office 97 SR 2 Professional. Everytime this user starts typing in a Word Document, it consistantly locks up. I use Task Mgr to try and end the task, but it’s using 100% of the resources. She never gets a chance to save any of the document. Everything gets locked up and I end up shutting the PC off. Any suggestions.
