Wrong Date Format in WORD 2002

In Word 2002 running on Win XP, I am unable to set the default date format to the Australian DD/MM/YY even though this is set as the Windows default format and I request a change to English(Australian).
In the Word/Insert/Date and Time it always reverts to English(U.S.) and I get MM/DD/YY

ANY SUGGESTIONS ??
