wrong mac/adapter address! Help

Please help. I am running windows me and cannot get an internet connection. The external cable modem (terayon TJ210) is working fine, the pc reads the modem, and the data transfer light is fine, (transferring data o.k) but i have no connection. 2things i have discovered, 1. i have discovered my mac address is not the same as the adapter address. How do i resolve this. And 2. i am using the help wizard and it is telling me my com port may be closed. How do i resolve this. any help is really appreciated. Cheer’s. John.
