Xcopy command holding the files.

I’ve copied some data files from one Windows NT 4.0 server to another Windows NT 4.0 server, using ‘xcopy’ command by telneting to the source server. The files that I’ve copied were not released on the source server even after the copy process has completed. I had to wait for hours together to use those files again. Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.
