XP Clients and NT4 Roaming Profiles

I am having a problem and wondering if anyone else has come across it.
The XP clients seem to think offline files / cache option is set for the roaming profile ? however I see no way of setting this on an NT4 share.
KB article 287566 is little help as it relates to 2K only.

Any ideas welcome!
