XP freezes up

I have a machine with XP pro on it and when it first boots up it works fine. After about ten minutes it starts freezing up about every 15 seconds. It does not matter if I am writing a letter in word or if I am on the internet or doing nothing at all. I have all the updates from microsoft and the machine is almost new. I thought it might be the cpu fan but it is working fine. Any Ideas?
