Xp hang on boot & explorer not working

when i boot up i XP it looks like its working fine (apart from not being able to open control pannel ect..) but about 1.5 min later i hear the startup sound. to top it all off when i open explorer wont bring up the dial up connection. even if i connect manualy explorer just comes up invald page blah blah. plz help iv tryed everything
