XP pro hang@intro no icon build.. end

XP Pro hangs at intro sound, displays chosen
desktop pic and stops building desktop parts

only access is to taskmanager (components running
are acceptable proccesses)

is reg faulty? if so how to get back dated
as scanreg can’t be found. OEM disks will wipe all
data! cannot allow personal data wipe.
this is a compaq laptop running (was) xp pro.
