XP QuickLaunch menu

I have WinXP Professional installed on my laptop, but I am not able to view the QuickLaunch toolbar. I have done the usual – rt. click on taskbar-Properties-show QuickLaunch–the taskbar is not locked, but the QuickLaunch toolbar will not appear nomatter what I do. All help is appreciated.
