XP reboots with a Compaq MV940 display

A new computer will not start Windows XP with a Compaq MV940 display. It just reboots. It works OK in failsafe mode, but not in normal mode. Changing to another dsplay solves the problem. The MV940 display works fine on another computer.
Has this occured to anyone else?
I am not sure whether this is a WinXP problem or is it is a graphics card problem. The graphics card is an Inno3D GForce FX 5200.
