xp setup without fdd

I am in the process of reverting a toshiba laptop from vista back to xp. The problem I have is that the laptop does not have a fdd to use the setup disks with. I bought a sony usb fdd and set the boot sequence to boot from the fdd first. Everything went fine until I put in disk six and got a blue screen saying the setup had halted to keep from damaging the computer and gave an error code. The error message did mention something about having just installed a hard drive which I did not do. What do I need to do to force setup to continue?
