Three computers: Windows XP Pro (XP), Windows 98 SE (98), and Windows 95 B (95).
All three are on a P2P network. XP has “simple file sharing” off. 95’s and 98’s (9x’s) shares can be accessed from 9x or XP by entering the right password. XP’s shares can be accessed when logged onto 9x as a user authorized to the share. XP’s Shared Documents can be accessed by anyone. Everything is as it should be.
Then one day XP’s shares can’t be accessed. A “password is required” prompt appears while the shared drive letter is being assigned when logging onto 9x as an XP authorized user. The response to any password entered says the password is invalid. When trying to access XP through Network Neighborhood on 9x a password prompt is presentedon IPC$, and the shares can’t be seen. XP can still get to 9x, and 9x can get to each other.
Turning on simple file sharing allows “Guest” sharing for new shares.
I tried System Restore, but it didn’t help.
I uninstalled and re-installed File and Printer Sharing, but it didn’t help.
Any ideas, short of re-installing XP?
