XP vs HP scanner

I have a HP 3500c scanner which wont work with XP pro.
When I install the software and the scanner in a friends XP pro machine it works fine.
When I install into my XP pro the software gets about ? way thru and comes up with an error message with something about virtual Java.
Does anyone know what this means?
