20 things that make Dr. Sheldon Cooper TV's biggest geek

What makes The Big Bang Theory's Dr. Sheldon Cooper so geeky? TechRepublic contributor Edmond Woychowsky shares his list of top 20 reasons.

There seem to be more geeks on American television than at any time in the past. A few of these characters, including Abby Sciuto and Timothy McGee from NCIS, are memorable, but for me, Dr. Sheldon Cooper is one geek who stands out. If you've ever watched The Big Bang Theory, you'll probably agree with me (many TechRepublic members do agree, according to our recent Geekend poll). If you haven't seen the sitcom, here is my top 20 list (in no particular order) as to why Sheldon is the biggest geek on television.

  1. Sheldon is an obsessive fan of comic books and science fiction. This goes a long way in explaining the restraining orders from Stan Lee and Leonard Nimoy.
  2. Sheldon not only has an extensive comic book collection, but he is fully aware of its contents.
  3. Photo: CBS Corp.Like any true Star Trek fan, Sheldon has strong feelings concerning Will Wheaton, or as he is referred to in The Big Bang Theory, Evil Will Wheaton. (Photo credit: CBS Corp.)
  4. His job is researching String Theory -- can you get any geekier?
  5. He has a large collection of geeky tee-shirts, which are so memorable that there is now a website about Sheldon's shirts.
  6. He possesses obscure geek knowledge, such as the location of the retroreflectors on the Moon's surface.
  7. Although he isn't an engineer, the Oompa-Loompas of science, Sheldon does participate in robot combat.
  8. In season three, Sheldon's laptop of choice is an Alienware M17x, the ultimate geek laptop.
  9. Sheldon computed the optimal seating position in his apartment and his neighbor Penny's apartment.
  10. Sheldon is the person to see when questing in MMORPGs, such as Age of Conan.
  11. Sheldon doesn't play the normal version of the word game Boggle -- he plays Klingon Boggle.
  12. Even though he wasn't born when Adam West played the role of Batman, Sheldon is a fan.
  13. Sheldon is no stranger to arguing with experts on any subject. An example of this is when he accused the local Chinese restaurant of serving orange chicken instead of tangerine chicken.
  14. Sheldon dabbles in lasers, so much so that the government supposedly took away one of his lasers and the hushed witnesses.
  15. He gave a Physics Department Paintball Strategy Meet, which serves as an example of "geekifying" everything that he touches.
  16. Caffeine has a pronounced effect on Sheldon, even if he does consider it a gateway drug.
  17. He owns his own Flash costume, complete with muscles!
  18. Sheldon possesses a master's degree and two PhDs.
  19. Like most of the people who visit TechRepublic, Sheldon tries to explain to his family what he does for a living, but it doesn't help.
  20. Sheldon measures both the liquid input and output of his body, so be careful when looking for a measuring cup for making pancakes.

What are your favorite Sheldon geek traits? Let me know in the discussion.

Apparently none of the previous comments take into account the fact that Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Raj work at Caltech. You cannot compare that environment to a normal place of employment, or any other school, for that matter. My husband has 3 degrees from Caltech, and my eldest son also graduated from there. As far as not being into sci-fi, after finals his freshman year, he and a dozen of his classmates spent the entire night at our house watching Star Wars (IV, V, VI). I am married to a geek, and my child is a geek, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Favorite Sheldon line - "I am not insane, my mother had me tested".

"Why did the chicken cross the Mobius strip? To get to the same side!" I had to get a piece of paper and make a strip before my English-major wife could understand the joke.

Although I watch and like The Big Bang, as far as I know the comic book and sci-fi thing is overdone. I spent many years at University (under- and post-graduate) and have always worked in a field with a scientific background. Of all the people I've known none had a comic book or sci-fi hangup. Comic books and sci-fi are not about reality, science is. Don't most scientists look down on such baloney? On a program about The Big Bang some real scientist they interviewed said the comic book thing was overdone. As for Abby Sciuto, a junkie, yes, a pole dancer, yes, someone on psychotropic medication, yes, but a "brilliant scientist", very definitely no. What nonsense.

I think Leonard is a geek while Sheldon has a social disorder.

Let's not forget Sheldon's alternative version of a well known game: "Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock." First time I saw that, I laughed soooo hard! It's still funny.

This one quote sums it up: "While others have fallen prey to the inexplicable need for human contact. My work will go on interrupted and social relationships will continue to baffle and repulse me." Sheldon is Awesome.

He spends his Friday night reformatting and reinstalling Linux on his computer.

He takes offense at being called a "rocket scientist". In his opinion it might as well be said that his is a toll taker at the bridge.

Not that anyone doubts Sheldon Cooper's geek status by now, but here's a couple more telltale signs he's a geek: 1. He uses behavioral psychology principles to modify the behavior of people in his life. Doing so, by itself, isn't geeky. Every dog trainer does it. What's geeky is citing B.F. Skinner as a source while doing so. 2. He has just a little bit of trouble relating to normal human beings.

My uncle is a physicist and he said he never met anyone like Sheldon Cooper in his field. That being said, the show is awesome and he is the best character, so not hating here, just making an observation!

Sheldon is a meta-geek, or a a geek's geek. He makes other geeks around him feel like frat bros in comparison. My favorite quote is the "Post hoc ergo propter hoc" to his mum over the phone.

One thing is having a flash costume, another is to go to a Halloween party as the Doppler Effect. Best costume ever

Not a just little bit trouble, but a lot specially with Penny, that is the central point of fun of the show. Other geeky thing of Shreldon is that he is always showing how Windows is so easy vs Linux

That he built his own CAT scanner (with radiation burns and the unfortunate demise of it's first occupant).

The Doppler Effect costume was a mark of genius - from the scriptwriters...

Also, that his idea of fun on a weekend is backing up his HD, reformatting it, and reloading all his operating systems.
