OLPCRemember the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program? IT News Digest ran a few pieces on OLPC in the last a few months, the most recent by John Bartley – Intel inside $100 laptop? – in which Intel announced its joining of the program and contribution of funds.

Well, it appears that Nigerian schoolchildren who received the XO laptops have used them to explore pornographic sites on the Internet, according to the the official News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

NAN said its reporter had seen pornographic images stored on several of the children’s laptops. NAN reports:

“Efforts to promote learning with laptops in a primary school in Abuja have gone awry as the pupils freely browse adult sites with explicit sexual materials.”

Excerpt from Reuters:

A representative of the One Laptop Per Child aid group was quoted as saying that the computers, part of a pilot scheme, would now be fitted with filters.

My personal take is that the above is probably just some individual acts by a limited number of students. Yet the bigger question is really just how much control or filtering is in order and appropriate.

What about the rest of you IT professionals out there? What kind of Internet filtering, if any, do you employ in the office?
