Motherboard assembly - Top
With the exception of the two diagonal brackets that secure the motherboard and shielding to the cooling system, there's not much to see on top of the motherboard assembly. The motherboard is mounted upside down in the chassis, therefore most of the interesting components are hidden on the bottom.

Better to open it than use it?!
I'd much rather my 13 year take it apart and study it than actually play on it! Maybe learn something... 
They would be willing to take a loss on the system for the same reason desk jet printers and cell phones are cheap. It's the consumables - buy more ink, minutes, games... Once you're hooked it's a steady cash stream....
