The retail package of the Microsoft Plus! Companion for Windows 95 was released on the same day as the operating system - August 24, 1995. While it was in development, the code name for Plus! was Frosting, as in it was the frosting on the cake that was the Windows 95 operating system.

In their promotions, Microsoft described the Microsoft Plus! Companion for Windows 95 as follows

Targeted at Windows 95 enthusiasts, Microsoft Plus! is the essential Windows 95 companion designed to fully exploit the power of 486 and Pentium class PC's.
