Does anyone know the story behind the image of the US flag identified only as "Whitehouse"? Only the fireworks images came from Smashing Magazine. The others are all apparently: "Images courtesy of local, state, or Federal Government in the United States."

Back before and during the US Civil War, it was considered acceptable for military units to embroider or otherwise mark the US flag the unit carried into battle with the unit motto or a list of its major battles, but that practice died out over a century ago.

Certainly for at least the last seventy-plus years, any sort of writing or decoration on the US flag would be considered desecration of the flag. I cannot image any US citizen over the age of 40 who would consider autographing or tagging a US flag as being acceptable conduct. Apparently we now have a generation who feels differently.
