Apple has spent years drawing a bright line between the Mac and the iPad. macOS 27 may be starting to smudge it.
The developer beta for macOS 27 Golden Gate includes several features that have reignited speculation about Apple’s first touchscreen Mac laptop. Apple has not announced such a device, but new touch-friendly gestures, Sidecar changes, and supply chain chatter are giving rumor watchers fresh material.
Apple has not confirmed the existence of such a product, but reports point to a growing body of evidence inside macOS 27 itself.
Three features drawing attention
One of the biggest clues is a change to Sidecar, Apple’s feature that lets an iPad serve as a secondary display for a Mac. In macOS 27, users can directly interact with macOS elements using touch on the connected iPad. Previous versions relied on a mouse or trackpad for navigation.
According to MacRumors, this marks a significant shift for macOS, which has long been designed around traditional desktop input methods.
Another addition is pull-to-refresh functionality, a familiar gesture on iPhones and iPads. The feature allows users to swipe down to refresh content in apps such as Safari, Mail, News, Podcasts, and Calendar. While the gesture can be performed using a trackpad, some observers believe its arrival could also support future touch-enabled Macs.
A third hint comes from Apple’s new Siri-powered Spotlight experience. The “Search or Ask” feature appears as a dark, pill-shaped interface within macOS 27. Analysts and enthusiasts have suggested the design could pair naturally with a Dynamic Island-style cutout if Apple introduces one on a future MacBook display.
Supply chain leak adds to expectations
Software clues are not the only source fueling the rumors. A supply chain leaker known as Instant Digital claimed this week that touchscreen support for MacBooks is no longer in doubt.
“It’s 100% confirmed that the MacBook screen will be touch-enabled,” Instant Digital wrote in a post on Weibo, according to 9to5Mac.
The report noted that recent signs of touch-capable display production could indicate that preparations for the hardware are already underway.
The MacBook Ultra is said to feature an OLED display, a thinner chassis, touch-screen support, and either a Dynamic Island or a punch-hole camera design. It is also expected to use next-generation M6 Pro and M6 Max processors.
Launch timeline remains unclear
Apple has yet to comment publicly on the touchscreen MacBook rumors. macOS 27 is currently available in developer beta, with a public beta expected in July and a full release anticipated in September.
As for the hardware itself, reports vary. Some point to a launch in late 2026, while others suggest Apple could wait until early 2027 before unveiling its first touchscreen Mac laptop.
