Android flagships may soon cost more as Qualcomm passes rising chip costs to customers.

Qualcomm plans to increase prices for its Snapdragon processors beginning September 1, a move that could make future Android smartphones more expensive as manufacturers face higher component costs.

The company confirmed the increase while reporting its fiscal third-quarter earnings. CEO Cristiano Amon said the decision is aimed at protecting margins as semiconductor manufacturing costs continue to climb.

“Cost went up, prices are going to go up,” Amon told CNBC.

Qualcomm said the semiconductor industry is dealing with higher costs across multiple areas, including wafer fabrication, assembly, testing, advanced packaging, memory, and other materials. Despite those pressures, the company said demand for its products remains healthy. The chipmaker did not disclose how much prices will increase.

However, earlier industry reports suggested some Snapdragon chips could see price increases in the double-digit percentage range.

Smartphone makers could pass higher costs to buyers

Because Snapdragon processors power many premium and midrange Android devices, any increase in chip prices could eventually be reflected in retail prices.

Manufacturers including Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, and others rely on Qualcomm’s processors across smartphones and tablets. Future flagship devices expected to use next-generation Snapdragon chips could be among the first products affected if vendors pass along the added expense.

The timing also adds pressure to an industry already dealing with higher memory prices, which have increased manufacturing costs across consumer electronics.

Amon said shifting consumer behavior already reflects those trends. “Consumer preference within the premium category is changing towards a preference to the lower end of the premium, as well to last year’s phone, because of the memory price increases,” Amon told CNBC.

He also described the higher supply costs as temporary. “There’s also a change in gross margin because of the high supply cost that you’re all hearing about,” Amon said. “It’s a temporary, short-term thing we are addressing with price increases.”

Rising costs ripple across the Android ecosystem

Qualcomm’s decision highlights how supply chain inflation is spreading beyond memory chips to nearly every stage of semiconductor production.

For consumers, that could mean fewer bargains on upcoming Android phones as manufacturers weigh whether to absorb higher chip costs or pass them on. Premium devices may face the greatest pricing pressure, but midrange phones could also become more expensive if component costs continue climbing.

There are still important unknowns. Qualcomm has not revealed the exact size of its price increase, and smartphone brands have not said whether they will raise retail prices. Some manufacturers could offset higher costs through supply agreements, product changes, or narrower profit margins, meaning the impact may vary from one device to another.
