Microsoft’s Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7961 for 25H2 fixes File Explorer flashes, adds voice typing for renaming, and restores Administrator Protection.
Microsoft has rolled out Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7961 (KB 5079382) to users in the Beta Channel as part of testing for version 25H2.
The new update focuses on polishing the user experience and tightening security.
The most relatable fix in this update targets the “white flash” that often occurs when opening new File Explorer windows or tabs, specifically when the app is set to open to “This PC.” According to the Windows Insider Blog, the team has “removed white flash when launching new File Explorer windows or tabs when File Explorer was set to open to This PC.”
But the improvements to File Explorer don’t stop at visuals. You can now use your voice to stay organized. Insiders can now use the Windows key plus H to trigger voice typing while renaming files. Additionally, the update addresses some behind-the-scenes stability, having “Improved reliability of unblocking files downloaded from the internet in order to preview them in File Explorer.”
On the security front, Microsoft is bringing back a feature designed to keep your system’s keys to the kingdom under tighter security. Known as Administrator Protection, this tool is designed to prevent free-floating admin rights from being exploited by malware.
The company explains that “administrator protection is being re-enabled and aims to protect free-floating admin rights for administrator users, allowing them to still perform all admin functions with just-in-time admin privileges.”
This feature is currently turned off by default, but IT professionals can toggle it on using group policies or Intune.
Microsoft is also tweaking how we share files. If you’ve ever accidentally triggered the sharing tray while trying to move a window, this update is for you. The company is using a smaller “peek view” for the drag tray to make it less intrusive.
“Based on feedback we’re making some refinements to drag tray, using a smaller peek view to reduce accidental invocation and make it easier to dismiss when interacting near the top of the screen,” the company wrote.
This build is part of the Windows 11, version 25H2 cycle. As with most Beta Channel releases, these features are rolling out gradually. This means even if you download the update today, you might not see every change immediately unless you have the “Get the latest updates as they are available” toggle turned on in your settings.
