Opening a photo or launching the editor in Windows 11 could soon take less time.

Microsoft began rolling out a redesigned Photos app to Windows Insiders on October 15, 2026, introducing a faster editor, an improved viewer, and a unified gallery. The company plans wider availability later in 2026 but has not announced an exact release date.

The improvements could simplify image handling for people working across Windows PCs, iPhones, and cloud storage. IT teams can also use the preview period to assess how the changes affect existing workflows.

A faster editor, improved viewer, and connected gallery

The redesign introduces three main components: a rebuilt editor, an updated viewer, and a unified gallery. According to Microsoft’s October 15 announcement, the editor launches 25% faster than the previous version.

Built using WinUI 3, the editor organizes its tools into Crop, Enhance, Repair, and Stylize. It supports HDR editing and lets users edit and save HEIC and WebP images in their original formats, making it easier to work with iPhone photos on Windows.

The Repair tool uses an updated AI model to remove unwanted objects. Microsoft is also expanding Relight to all Windows 11 devices, allowing users to position up to three virtual light sources, adjust their colors and brightness, or apply lighting presets.

The viewer starts 15% faster on average, with improvements of up to 30% for HEIC images. It also adds SVG support, improved HDR viewing, keyboard navigation, and an information panel showing camera details, file metadata, and a color histogram.

These performance figures come from Microsoft’s controlled tests on x64 and ARM64 Windows 11 devices against Photos version 2026.11060. Actual results may vary.

The gallery brings local photos and videos together with OneDrive and iCloud collections. Users can browse by date, organize albums, find images by people, and search using natural-language descriptions.

iCloud integration requires Apple’s iCloud for Windows app, while OneDrive Camera Backup can sync photos from iPhones and Android devices. OneDrive sign-in remains optional for accessing local and iCloud content.

Enhanced searches for locally stored images through Windows Search require supported hardware. That capability complements Microsoft’s redesigned Windows Search experience, which emphasizes local results and improved file previews.

Windows Insiders get the update before the wider rollout

The redesigned Photos experience is initially reaching Windows Insiders, although Microsoft has not specified a complete rollout schedule by channel. General availability is planned for later in 2026.

Some features entered testing earlier. Microsoft’s Photos Insider release notes confirm that a refreshed viewer and Photos (Preview) gallery began reaching Experimental-channel users on July 27, 2026.

Photos is one of several Windows features under Insider testing, alongside new Windows Search shortcuts that allow users to adjust settings without opening the Settings app. The two updates are being tested separately.

For IT administrators, the preview offers an opportunity to test image-format compatibility and connected-gallery workflows. Organizations using OneDrive or iCloud should also review existing synchronization and data-handling policies.

The Photos overhaul follows Microsoft’s Windows 11 usability improvements addressing File Explorer, recovery, and everyday PC frustrations. Microsoft’s wider rollout later in 2026 will put those speed claims to a more meaningful test across the Windows 11 devices people use every day.
