98 to XP

A friend of mine recently updated his OS from 98 (insert sound of gaging) to XP (insert sound of purring). He has loaded all the backups onto his computer and he only gets “gibrish.” I assume…?… he means girish as ASCII. What is happening? How can it be fixed?
