I work in the public sector. It is a fine place to work most of the time, as we are not forced to work at the mad pace of some private sector companies. However, we are also not forced to adapt new technology or innovation as fast (or at all) because the pressures to perform and to be efficient are much lower.
My boss has been working here for many years, and has never worked in the public sector. His knowledge in some areas is far behind where technology is today. I came here after manyyears in the private sector and after gaining experience and knowledge using several current development applications. I have used my knowledge to change and develop several systems to run more efficiently and to be more user friendly. These developments received a positive response from many of the end users and other department managers, however, they have resulted in a negative response from my manager. He seems to be in denial that anything new has been developed. As time progresses and more things change, he becomes more defensive and tries to remove me from projects. This is difficult because I am often asked to be on projects by other staff and I often end up sneaking around in order to be involved. I have tried including him inthe development meetings, but his lack of knowledge often stalls progress and often the other staff members do not want him on the projects.
Help, what can I do? When I do get the development work here it is great, but having to sneak around is terrible. I would also like formal recognition of my work, but I have tried to minimize this, as it just seems to make my situation worse. Can anyone relate to this? Any advice?
