Accessing C drive

I have a System running WINNT Workstation,
The problem i have is everytime you go to my computer or explorer and try to access the C drive, it hangs up for a few minutes then shows the data. the system runs fin otherwise, could this be a virus or possibly a bad hard drive. I have ran chkdsk /f and it found problems. still lags when accessing C drive
