Adding a 2nd win 2000 domain controller

I have a windows 2000 server which is the domain server. I want to replace this server with another windows 2000 server. I’ve installed win 2000 server on the new server & connected to the existing domain (it can access the existing server). when I run the active directory wizard I get an error “the domain can’t be contacted or doesn’t exist” Any ideas
