Administrator account/priveledge GONE

by crunchedtobite . Updated 20 years, 9 months ago

i installed a router for a friend of mine. the router was installed successfully, but when i tried to install software for the d-link wireless card on one of his other pc’s, the window appeared that warned me “this account has no administrative privleges”. ok, so according to my friend, when he wants to install software, he uses a keystroke combo to bring up his admin account, enters ‘admin’ for the name and ‘password’ for the password (I know, bad practice), and he has admin priveleges. but now. we cannot do that at all. no admin anything. it would not even allow me to view most settings let alone change them. i didn’t change anything. i always cancel out of any windows i open, anyway. it was suggested by his ‘pc geek’ that we should do a reinstall of winxp (what a pain). where did the admin account go? i want to try to find out what happened so that it won’t happen again. i need to get to the bottom of this. it was a very strange incident, bells went off in my head, and i cannot pinpoint just what it was that set them off. my friend seems to have airtight security on his pc, so i don’t know how he could have gotten a problem from the internet (but i could not view some settings). the ‘pc geek’ guy did the setup of all my friend’s computers. the router also has security enabled. CAN we get the admin account back or find it without reinstalling winxp? has this ever happened to anyone before? what caused it and how can we fix it? my friend’s pc is an IBM and rather new. i thought at first it was an IBM security thing, but i just don’t know. the other pc had a similar problem, but win2000 was easier to deal with as far as the administrator account stuff. thanks for amy input
